New York's progressive state income tax can take a meaningful bite out of your paycheck, especially in higher income bands. (Note: New York City and Yonkers residents also owe local income tax, which this estimate does not include.)
How New York state income tax works
New York uses graduated brackets ranging from 3.9% on the first $8,500 of taxable income for single filers up to 10.9% on income above $25 million. Most workers fall in the 5.5% to 6.85% range, with the 5.9% bracket starting around $80,650 and the 6.85% bracket starting at about $215,400 for singles. Joint filers see roughly doubled thresholds on the lower brackets.
New York also offers a state-level standard deduction of $8,000 for single filers and $16,050 for married filing jointly, which the calculator subtracts from your wage base before applying brackets. Remember that NYC residents owe an additional city income tax that is not included here.
